Close to 20 fund managers have been added to the FE Hall of Fame following the recent rebalance of the FE Alpha Manager rating.
FE Alpha Manager ratings are the culmination of the fund manager’s total performance throughout their career, including all the different funds they have managed. This rating is designed to reward fund managers who have distinguished themselves with consistently good performance.
The elite group of managers who have been FE Alpha Manager rated over the last seven years are put in the FE Hall of Fame, which currently includes 61 fund managers out of the 200 to hold FE Alpha Manager status.

This year, 18 fund managers have entered the FE Hall of Fame for the first time, including Columbia Threadneedle’s Mark Heslop, Schroders’ Robin Parbrook, Unicorn’s Chris Hutchinson and Veritas’ Ezra Sun.
Of the above managers, Spencer Adair works on the largest portfolio. He is co-manager on the £4.7bn Baillie Gifford Global Alpha Growth fund, which he runs alongside Malcolm MacColl and Charles Plowden. He joined Baillie Gifford in 2000 and spent time working in the fixed income, Japanese, European and UK teams, before becoming an investment manager for the Global Alpha portfolio.
Roger Morley works on the second largest fund from the above, co-managing the £3.3bn MFS Meridian Global Equity fund with Ryan P McAllister. Morley joined MFS originally as an analyst in 2002, becoming a fund manager in 2009.
Third largest is Robin Parbrook who runs the £3.3bn Schroder ISF Asian Total Return fund with fellow FE Alpha Manager King Fuei Lee. Parbrook is the co-head of Asian alternative investments at Schroders.
Not all of the new FE Alpha Managers run giant portfolios, however. Bryan Agbabian manages the £24.5m Allianz Global Agricultural Trends fund, which focuses companies that profit directly or indirectly from the production, storage and transport of agricultural commodities or processing and sale of foodstuffs and beverages.
In terms of the funds from the above managers that have generated the highest returns over the past five years, Ezra Sun’s Veritas Asian fund has made 104.27 per cent return, followed by Andrew Holliman’s Polar Capital North American fund which made 99.16 per cent.
In addition, 17 managers have retained their FE Hall of Famer status for the fifth year in a row after earning the accolade every year since the 2015 Hall of Fame launch. These include big names such as Neil Woodford of Woodford Investment Management, Mark Slater from Slater Investments and Harry Nimmo of Aberdeen Standard.

Charles Younes, research manager at FE, said: “Seven years of delivering risk-adjusted alpha and consistent outperformance is a big ask, especially during prolonged periods of uncertainty and market volatility.
“It’s therefore very encouraging to see so many managers retaining their spot or joining this elite group for the first time. Investors can be confident that the performance of managers in the FE Hall of Fame is down to genuine skill and conviction, rather than luck.”
