Life fund winners dominated by international bonds

21 May 2009

The rally in UK equities appears to have had little impact on life insurance funds with the top performers over the last year dominated by overseas and global bonds, according to data on Trustnet.

By Barney Hatt,

Reporter

Only ten per cent of the 6,000 life insurance funds listed on Trustnet have generated positive returns over the last twelve months. The top performer is L&G’s Neptune Japan Opportunities fund which has generated returns of 49.6 per cent over the last year.

L&G has also produced the second best performer over the same period. The firm’s Overseas Bond, which has returned 32.9 per cent, is one of four overseas funds in the top six. The domination of funds with international exposure outside the UK is indicated by the fact that the top twenty performers also includes seven global and two emerging market funds. All but one of the top twenty are fixed interest funds.

The worst performers are dominated by funds with exposure to Eastern Europe and in particular Russian equities, reflecting the rapid slowdown in the country’s economy and continuing volatility of Russian investment markets.
